Since the early 15th century the Roskilde Cathedral has been designated as Denmark's royal burial place which together with the construction of the remarkable building are the reasons for its listing on the World Heritage List.
The impressive red brick cathedral has a number of chapels built on to or inside the cathedral and there are hundreds of graves under the cathedral floor.
From August, 2010, the projected sarcophagus of the Danish Queen Margrethe II and Prince Henrik can be seen in the Cathedral. The sarcophagus is the work of the famous Danish artist Bjørn Nørgaard. The coffin made of transparent glass is decorated with silhouettes of the Queen and Prince Consort and carried by three columns made of granite from Bornholm, marble from Greenland and basalt from the Faeroes, representing the lands governed by Margrethe II. Each column will be adorned with two silver elephant's heads symbolising the Order of the Elephant. The base for it all will probably be made of French sandstone, which may perhaps be interpreted as a recognition of Prince Henrik's French origins.
The work is expected to take six years to complete. The Queen and Prince Consort will be laid to rest in the St Birgitte's Chapel inside the Cathedral.
As Roskilde Cathedral is a parish church it might be closed to visitors due to services or religious ceremonies. Please check the calendar prior to your visit or call the Admin. Office tel. +45 46351624 or the Tourist Office tel. +45 46316565.
